Sundowners are the quintessential Namibian safari custom. Gin is the quintessential sundowner drink. Sadly, the quality of gin served, often fail to match the splendour of the glorious Namibian sunsets. That has changed because Namibia has joined the world of craft gin.
Namibia has three operating craft gin distilleries. Stillhouse Atlantic, the smallest of the three, opened for business in 2017 in Swakopmund.
Sandy le Roux, owner and distiller at Stillhouse Atlantic, started her craft at home. Inspired by her two boys’ efforts at fermentation and distilling, she eventually completed a few training courses in Johannesburg. She kept developing her recipes at home, until 2017 when she decided to take the plunge into commercial distilling.

What sets Sandy’s gin apart is her creative use of local ingredients. She includes uncommon ingredients such as sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) and !nara seeds (Acanthosicyos horridus). Her pink gin includes roselle a local wild hibiscus variety. Sandy employs vapour infusion to produce her gin and produces all of her neutral spirits in-house.
The entire process from making the mash until the gin is bottled takes about four weeks. Stillhouse Atlantic can produce 200 litres of gin per month. Sandy has recently introduced a second still which would increase her capacity.

In addition to gin, Stillhouse Atlantic also produces Umber, a cold brew coffee liquor. This is made in collaboration with Two Beards Coffee Roasters, located just around the corner in the same industrial complex.
Stillhouse Atlantic offers tastings on request. They also form part of the West Coast Bites & Brews half-day tour offered by Charly’s Desert Tours. The distillery is located right next door to Namib Dunes Brewery at No 5, Einstein Street, Eastern Concepts Complex, Swakopmund.
